Robert Downey Jr. is the last surviving member of the MCU's Doctor Doom squad in Avengers: Doomsday SDCC 2024.

In the upcoming film Avengers Doomsday, Robert Downey Jr. will play Doctor Doom from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

 

 

The late Robert Downey Jr. departed. was unveiled today during the San Diego Comic-Con Marvel Studios panel. will be joining the MCU again, but this time as Doctor Doom in Avengers 5, which is now known as Avengers: Doomsday. After the panel, Downey Jr. appeared, surrounded by Doom Bots, and said he would "see you in two years" alongside Doomsday. The movie will be released on May 7, 2027.

 

Sadly, nobody came out of the hall knowing exactly how this was going to operate. Is he in any way portraying Iron Man, Tony Stark, who perished (like, really, really perished!) in Avengers: Endgame while battling Thanos? Is this another individual who has a striking resemblance to Tony Stark? Is he from one of the countless different planets?

 

Who knows?

All Downey Jr. had to say about the situation was, "New mask, same task." What knowledge do I possess? I like playing complex characters.

 

Whatever the motivation behind this hiring, there will almost certainly be a plot that extends beyond just wanting Downey Jr., as bizarre as this may appear, as the MCU is more than capable of tolerating this kind of lookalike lunacy back.

 

The Russo Brothers will be returning to the MCU to direct Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, which is scheduled for release on May 1, 2026, a year early, as we also learnt at the same panel.

 

It was previously anticipated that Avengers 5 would be named Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and centre around, well, Kang.

 

However, after Kang actor Jonathan Majors was found guilty of one count of assault and one count of harassment in December of last year, Disney broke off ties and took steps to minimise the actor. Ever since, there have been speculations indicating that Marvel will be moving from a phase focused on Kang to one focused on Dr. Doom, and it appears that those rumours were true.
