Robert Downey Jr. reprised his "Avengers" role as Doctor Doom in two flicks.
28/7/2024,
When Marvel debuted at San Diego Comic-Con, the public was
informed of the amazing news.
Robert Downey Jr.'s iconic foe Doctor Doom will make a
reappearance in the Fantastic Four film series in May 2026's Avengers: Doomsday
and May 2027's Avengers: Secret Wars. Furthermore, Kevin Feige officially
announced that the Russo brothers will direct the upcoming two Avengers films.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe began with Iron Man (2008),
and Downey went on to become one of the biggest cinematic stars in the world.
His contributions enabled the MCU to surpass all previous box office records,
and he was richly rewarded, taking home pay cheques of $50 million.
Following his character's death in 2019's Avengers: Endgame
while rescuing the universe, Downey announced his retirement from the role of
Iron Man/Tony Stark. Finding a hero to fill the big void left by Downey has
proven difficult for Marvel, which makes Saturday's announcement all the more
significant.
From the stage, Downey addressed the crowd, saying,
"New mask, same task."
In an almost ritualistic ceremony, Downey was unveiled
alongside Feige and the Russo Brothers, surrounded by roughly twenty
olive-robed men wearing masks reminiscent of Doctor Doom made of metal. Joe Russo
stated, "If we're going to bring Doctor Doom to the screen, he is one of
the most entertaining and complex characters in all of fiction.
"The world's greatest actor will be required if we are
to pull this off."
The crowd was tense, having been exposed to an hour of
Marvel Hall H madness earlier in the evening. "We give you the one person
who could play Victor von Doom as proof of the unimaginable possibilities of
the Marvel Universe," he said.
Next, a man wearing a green suit and wearing a mask came forward
and removed his mask. He seemed proud and prepared for the attention. It
happened instantly, as the more than 6,500 audience members lost all mental
clarity.
Just a short while ago, the Russo brothers made their debut
as the directors of these upcoming Avengers movies, which they will also
produce.
After their magnificent film montage, Anthony Russo
declared, "That four-movie run was incredible." As a result, we were
left feeling exhausted and lost. And then Joe and I might be able to see how to
go with all of you because of a very clear narrative.
According to Joe Russo, carrying on his brother's legacy,
"It's the largest narrative Marvel Comics has ever presented, and it's the
first comic book series I ever read as a child that truly made me fall in love
with comic books."
That's why Ant and I are standing here.
And I think every one of you knows what its name is. On the
big screen, the title of Avengers: Secret Wars flashed.
The upcoming Avengers films will be written by Stephen
McFeely, who collaborated with Christopher Markus on the Russos' Marvel films.
Secret Wars, the title of two 1980s Marvel event books, has long been
considered the Russo brothers' ideal project. Marvel's heroes and villains were
taken to a world named Battle World in Secret Wars by an all-powerful creature
known as The Beyonder, where they were made to engage in combat.
The news marks the beginning of a creative reimagining for
Avengers: Doomsday, the movie that will act as Avengers 5 and come before
Secret Wars. Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, a new Avengers 5, was unveiled by
Feige two years ago.
The movie originally called for Jonathan Majors to play the
time-traveling antagonist Kang. However, in December, a jury in New York found
Majors guilty of harassing and assaulting a previous lover. As a result, Marvel
severed their relationship with the actor, and the movie had to be reshot.
The decision was made amid Deadpool &
Wolverine's record-breaking first weekend, which is expected to rank as the
highest-opening R-rated film of all time and has given the MCU new life.
Notable too is the return of the Russo Bros.
Additionally, they directed Captain America: Winter Soldier
(2014), Captain America: Civil War (2016), and Avengers: Infinity War (2018).
With Avengers: Endgame (2019), they also achieved a record-breaking run that
briefly eclipsed Avatar as the biggest-grossing film of all time.
Despite directing streaming films like Cherry and The Grey
Man in the meantime, fans still hold them in high regard for their work on
Marvel.
Marvel Studios began in 2012 when Iron Man, Captain America,
and Thor were brought together for a team-up that would go on to become a
genre-defining hit.
This attempt resulted in the television series Avengers.
Many believed this to be an unachievable feat.
Downey played Lewis Strauss in Christopher Nolan's film
Oppenheimer. When he won his first Oscar earlier this year, he reached a
professional peak. The actor nominated for an Emmy also starred in HBO's The
Sympathiser.
