Passes Away
Johnson's success in the domestic circuit helped him get into the Indian team;
in the 1995–96 Ranji Trophy season, he bowled 10 for 152 against Kerala.
At the age of 52, former India pacer David Johnson passed
away in Bengaluru on Thursday. In two 1996 Test matches, he participated and
claimed three wickets.
During his 39 First-Class matches during his domestic
career, he amassed 125 wickets. In addition, he received four five-fors and one
ten-for.
One of the fastest bowlers in India, Johnson's exploits on
the local circuit helped him get into the Indian team. During the 1995–96 Ranji
Trophy season, he bowled 10 for 152 against Kerala.
In 1996, he played his first Test match in New Delhi,
against Australia. Michael Slater was dismissed by him while Australia was
touring India.
Although he was only able to participate in the first Test
match of the South African tour, the right-arm bowler managed to take the
wickets of Brian McMillan and Herschelle Gibbs.
The BCCI secretary, Jay Shah, sent his sympathies via X.
"Our sincere sympathies go out to David Johnson's family and friends, the
former Indian fast bowler. We shall never forget his contributions to the
game," Shah stated.
I was saddened to learn of my cricketing comrade David Johnson's demise. Sincere sympathies to his family. The former leg-spinner for India, Anil Kumble, said on X, "Gone too soon, 'Benny'."
