Maleria - Scientist Sir Ronald Ras

Today is the birthday of Sir Ronald Ras, the revolutionary inventor of winter fever (malaria), a once deadly infectious disease caused by a mosquito bite of a particular breed.

It is special that Ras, who made this discovery which is beneficial to all mankind, was born on this day in 1857 in Almora in Uttaranchal state of India.

His father, General Ras, was a senior officer in the British Army. Later, Renald returned to England for education at the age of eight.

Although it is true that Ras made such an important discovery and for that he also received the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1902, his original pen was literature and poetry writing. His articles started to be published in school life.

Rasna was also fond of painting. In 1873, he came first in painting in the Oxford and Cambridge Local Board examination. Rasna wanted to be a mathematician but entered medical college at his father's insistence.

Later he worked in Indian Medical Service for almost 25 years. He also worked at Presidency Medical College in Kolkata. During this period, after careful observation, he predicted to the world that malaria is becoming hot and spreading due to mosquito bites.

The night he saw the eggs of the microscopic bacteria infecting a mosquito's stomach with Maleria winter fever, he wrote a poem to his wife.

This day relenting God

Hath placed with my hand

A bondrous thing; and God

Be praised. At His command,

Seeking His Secret Deeds

With tears and toiling breath,

I find thy cunning seeds,

O million-murdering Death.

I know this little thing

A myriad men will save.

O Death, where is sting?

Thy Victory, O Grave?

So Sir Ronald Ras. After finishing his career in India, he returned to London, after which his research and literary production continued.

He left the world in London on 16 September 1932 at the age of 75 and rested permanently next to his wife.

Even today, many of his monuments are seen in Kolkata, Rajasthan, Andaman in India.

Rye Island in Angaman is a memorial to Rass !
