What is the cause of the latest deaths in Kerala if not the brain-eating amoeba?       The devouring of the brain When swimming, amoeba enters the body through the nose, makes its way to the brain, and causes swelling by destroying brain tissue.   A 14-year-old child receiving treatment for primary amoebic meningoencephalitis—a rare disease caused by Naegleria fowleri, sometimes referred to as the "brain-eating amoeba"—died on Wednesday in a private hospital in Kerala, according to state health officials.   When health officials discovered that the child had been swimming in a small, contaminated pond, they promptly implemented preventive measures.   Kerala has had three cases of this virus since May.
