The 29-year-old defeated fellow citizen Zou Jingyuan, winning 15.300 to 15.233.   The Chinese gymnast Zou, who won the silver medal, was the best qualifier for the final. Hisashi Mizutori, head coach of Team Japan, called Zou's ring routine "beautiful, powerful, and inimitable."   He lost out on the gold on Sunday by the narrowest of margins, 0.067 of a point.
