Paris,
with Liu taking first place.

Their 1-2 result in the strongman's event provided some
vindication for China's gymnasts, who had just missed out on gold in both the
team and all-around finals.
Liu Yang displayed his strength and successfully defended
his Olympic championship in the rings final on Sunday, giving China the
much-needed first gold medal in gymnastics at the Paris Games.
The 29-year-old defeated fellow citizen Zou Jingyuan,
winning 15.300 to 15.233.
The Chinese gymnast Zou, who won the silver medal, was the
best qualifier for the final. Hisashi Mizutori, head coach of Team Japan,
called Zou's ring routine "beautiful, powerful, and inimitable."
He lost out on the gold on Sunday by the narrowest of
margins, 0.067 of a point.
With a score of 15.100, Greek Eleftherios Petrounias won the
bronze medal.
China's gymnasts felt some vindication following their 1-2
finish in the strongman's event, especially after missing out on gold in the
all-around and team finals.
On Monday, it appeared as though China had won the team
competition easily, but Japan emerged victorious just in time, thanks to two of
China's gymnasts performing horribly on the last apparatus.
Two days later, Zhang Boheng of Team China had to settle for
silver behind Japan's Shinnosuke Oka in the men's all-around final, which was
an agonising blow for the team.
