Devshayani Ekadashi Vrat Katha

Once Yudhishthira requested Lord Krishna to tell him about the fasting method and importance of Ashadh Shukla Ekadashi. Then Lord Krishna said that this fast is known as Devshayani Ekadashi. This fast is considered important for the salvation of living beings. One who does not observe this fast gets a place in hell. Brahma Dev had told Narad ji the importance and method of this fast, I am telling you that. Its story is something like this-

According to the story, once upon a time, there was a great king Mandhata, who was very kind, religious, majestic and truthful. He used to serve his subjects like his children. He used to take care of their happiness and sorrows. Everyone was happy in his kingdom. Once there came a time when it did not rain for 3 consecutive years, due to which the crops were ruined and there was a famine. His subjects started crying for help.

One day the subjects pleaded with the king to find a way to come out of this situation. King Mandhata also got worried. He could not see this and he went towards the forest with the army. He kept travelling for many days and then he reached the ashram of Angira Rishi, son of Brahma Ji. He went inside the ashram and bowed to Angira Rishi. Angira Rishi asked him the reason for coming.

King Mandhata told Angira Rishi that his people are troubled due to famine, there is a food crisis. There is chaos all around. This situation has arisen due to a lack of rain. Tell him a way to deal with this crisis. On this, Angira Rishi said that you should observe the fast of Ashadh Shukla Ekadashi with proper rituals, in which Lord Vishnu has to be worshipped.

Angira Rishi said that by observing this fast, Lord Vishnu will be pleased and will fulfil your wish. With the virtue earned by you, there will be rain in the kingdom and the food crisis will be removed. The people will become happy again. Whoever observes this fast, his troubles are removed. He attains siddhis.

After paying obeisance to sage Angira, King Mandhata returned to his capital. When the Ashadh Shukla Ekadashi date came, he observed this fast with all his subjects according to the rules. He worshipped Vishnu and made donations. He observed the fast according to the rules. After some time of observing this fast, it rained in his kingdom. Due to this the yield of crops also increased. His kingdom again became full of wealth and grains. The sorrows of his subjects came to an end.
