After being quoted as uttering a homophobic slur, Pope Francis issues an apology.
The office of Pope Francis released a statement on Tuesday in response to rumours that during a private meeting with bishops, the pontiff had made disparaging remarks about LGBTQ+ individuals.
"Everyone, there is a place for you in the church! No one is unnecessary or redundant, and there is room for everyone. "Everyone is as we are," Pope Francis said in a message.
The pope "never intended to offend anyone or to express himself in anti-gay terms, and he apologizes to those who have been offended by the use of the word by others," according to Matteo Bruni, director of the Holy See Press Office.
It was revealed on Monday that Pope Francis had referred disparagingly to gay men at the Italian Bishops' Conference when they were asked if they might pursue a career as priests if they remained celibate. According to reports, the pope used a homophobic slur when he suggested that gay persons shouldn't be permitted to pursue priestly training even if they promise to remain celibate.
Several Italian news outlets later carried the comments after they were first published on the tabloid website Dagospia in Italy.
Although he emphasised that the blessings would be for the persons in the couples and not the couples themselves, Pope Francis has stated that priests should be allowed to bless same-sex couples. Pope Francis has a reputation for being publicly tolerant of LGBTQ+ people.
