Queen Chennamma of Bidnoor
(helping the Maratha Empire)
Queen of the Keladi Empire, Chennama Maharani Tararani, is known to all of us; we have heard and read about her prowess many times in history. Even in Karnataka, the brave and mighty queen Chennamma has gone down in Indian history. Bidanur Chennamma Rani Chennamma, because of her civility and goodness in the early days, was known. But this woman changed history and inspired women to fight against injustice. She is given a place of honour among the brave and fighting women of Indian history. She bravely faced every crisis that befell her kingdom and came to be known as Bidanur Chennamma Rani Chennamma, the saviour queen of the subjects.
Bidanur chennamma Rani Chennamma ruled for 25 years (1671–1696) over the small province of 'Keladi' situated on the coast of Karnataka. After the death of her husband, she took over the reins of governance. People also had respect for her. She used to pay attention to their every happiness and sorrow. Surrender was not in her blood! Seeing the same firmness as our queen, even the army used to fight for their lives. Bidanur Chennamma Chennamma Rani was known as a pious woman and a practical administrator of her time.
Even today, in the state of Karnataka, people remember her. Rani Chennamma has helped a lot in the Swarajya work of Marathi Shahi. This history is not known to most people. Due to the valuable help of this Chennamma Rani, Shiva's son, Chhatrapati Rajaram Maharaj, reached Jinji safely. She is a woman, and this queen did not fear Aurangzeb or Chhatrapati Rajaram Maharaj. To reach Shimogyas on the banks of Tungabhadra, Chhatrapati Rajaram Maharaj had to travel through the kingdom of Bednur.
Santaji Jagtap and Rupaji Bhosle, along with the Mughal army, had already clashed. Chhatrapati Rajaram Maharaj wanted to make this journey secretly because the Mughal army was following them. Chhatrapati Rajaram Maharaj left for Jinji. At that time, before reaching Shimoga on the banks of the Tungabhadra, Rajaram Maharaj had to travel through the Kingdom of Bednur. At this time, Queen Channamma was ruling the Kingdom of Bednur.
She knew Shiv Chhatrapati's work in the south to save Hindu religion and culture from Islamic invasion. She sympathised with the Marathas' struggle with the Mughals. And so when he challenged her to allow Chhatrapati Rajaram Maharaj to pass safely from her kingdom, she gladly offered him every kind of assistance. She considered it her royal duty to help the distressed Marathi kingdom.
She felt that what the Marathas were doing was the work of all Hindus in the south. Due to this feeling, without fearing the possible wrath of Emperor Aurangzeb, she carefully arranged the journey of Chhatrapati Rajaram Maharaj to her state. With her help, Chhatrapati Rajaram Maharaj, along with his companions, reached Shimogya safely.
Meanwhile, the Mughal army chasing Chhatrapati Rajaram Maharaj when they entered Bidanur kingdom mistakenly believed that Bidanur chennamma Chennamma Rani had helped Chhatrapati Rajaram Maharaj. Aurangzeb informed the queen about handing over the Maratha king to him. Chennamma Rani immediately replied that Rajaram had come to our kingdom. , but he had left our territory. They left behind some of their clothes and jewellery while going.
It has fallen into our hands, and we are sending it to you. Even though Bidanur chennamma pretended to have chased Rajaram Maharaj as soon as he entered Bidanur's kingdom, the Mughals were not fooled. He quickly conveyed the news of Bidanur Chennamma Chennamma Rani's assistance to Chhatrapati Rajaram Maharaj to the emperor. Then Aurangzeb got angry and sent a large army to punish the queen. Later, Santaji Ghorpade took the news of this force.
And foiled Mowgli's campaign against Rani. Then the Mughals settled the matter by taking some money as a fine from Channama Rani. Rani Chennamma is an unopened page in history. "Our salute to such a brave and brave queen."
