Conor McGregor, the longtime face of the UFC, is injured and
will not participate in the upcoming pay-per-view event in Las Vegas on June
29.
The organization's president, Dana White, made the
announcement on Thursday Night X, stating that number one contender Jiri
Prochazka will fight light heavyweight champion Alex Pereira at UFC 303.
McGregor was scheduled to meet sixth-ranked lightweight
contender Michael Chandler; however, the bout was called into question when the
fighter abruptly cancelled his June 3 news conference in Dublin. There was no
prompt explanation provided.
White did not go into detail about McGregor's wound.
It's a huge loss for the UFC to lose McGregor, who hasn't
performed in the Octagon for three years. Despite going through their peak at
the age of 35, they are still a huge draw to the gate and pay-per-view sales.
The UFC is in a difficult position as competitors like Amanda Nunes, Jon Jones, and Conor McGregor are either ending their careers or very close to retirement. The UFC is looking to a group of up-and-coming athletes who are still growing their fan base to help shape the future of the sport.
