International Friendship Day was formally declared on July
30 by the UN in 2011. On the first Sunday in August, people celebrate it worldwide, including India.
Around the world, people observe Friendship Day with great
enthusiasm as it is dedicated to cherishing and enjoying the
relationships of friendship.
Friendship Day is traditionally observed in India on the
first Sunday in August. In 2024, it falls on August 4.
This annual event is a way to recognise and cherish the
friends who enrich our lives by overcoming distance and culture.
The previous Friendship Day
Founder of Hallmark Cards Joyce Hall first proposed the
concept of Friendship Day in 1930.
It was decided to set aside a day on which friends might celebrate
and say hello to one another.
It eventually extended to other countries after becoming
well-known in the US.
However, it wasn't until 1958 that Paraguay proposed the
concept for the first World Friendship Day.
