6/7/2024,
Despite her close loss against Paula Badosa on Friday, Wimbledon awarded No. 14 seed Daria Kasatkina the best player of Day 5.
Kasatkina demonstrated her deft craft throughout her nearly three-hour session
on No. 3 Court.
After enduring a flurry of powerful blows from Badosa,
Kasatkina read the play and stopped a brilliantly timed defensive lob to deny
the Spaniard a point in a tense third set:
Even with the loss to Badosa, Kasatkina can still look back
on a strong grass-court campaign. Kasatkina won WTA 500 Eastbourne last week,
her first grass-court trophy of the year and her first title since 2022 after
placing runner-up at three WTA 500 events earlier in the year.
Before losing to Badosa, Kasatkina had equaled her best-ever winning run at the tour level with seven straight wins. After Wimbledon, Kasatkina still has a chance to make it back into the Top 10 depending on the outcomes of the remaining matches this week.
