History, Significance, and Topic of World
Population Day 2024
For World Population Day in 2024, the theme is "Leave
no one behind, count everyone."
World Population Day is observed on July 11th, to raise public awareness of population-related concerns around the globe and
their social implications.
In light of this historic event organized by the United
Nations, it is necessary to address issues related to population such as gender
equality, family planning, reproductive health and sustainable development.
On World Population Day, governments, organizations and
individuals can all engage in dialogue and action by recognizing the potential
and constraints that population dynamics provide.
Through this event, the UN wants to ensure a sustainable
future for all countries by promoting collaboration, understanding, and
innovative thinking.
Over the years, World Population Day has played a pivotal
role in raising public consciousness, advocating for reproductive rights, and
championing policies and programmes that advance sustainable development and
the welfare of all.
The previous World Population Day
The United Nations declared 1989 to be World Population Day,
and people began celebrating it that year. The idea originated on July 11,
1987, when there were five billion people on the planet. Dr. KC Zachariah, a
senior demographer with the World Bank, proposed that the day be observed as
World Population Day.
How Important World Population Day Is
World Population Day is important because it can lead to
more discussion and awareness about how population dynamics affect people's
quality of life, the sustainability of the environment, and socioeconomic
progress.
It serves as a reminder that, along with opportunities, our
expanding population also brings challenges that call for our attention and
preventative action.
World Population Day's theme
The theme of the 2024 World Population Day is "Leave no
one behind, count everyone". "This year's theme highlights the
importance of investing in data collection to understand issues, tailor
solutions, and drive progress," said UN Secretary-General Antonio
Guterres. Investment of money is also essential. I implore nations to take
advantage of this year's Summit of the Future to access reasonably
priced funding for sustainable development."
